Unique wall decor idea from Halloween to Christmas!

How about decorating the walls this Christmas? Looking for something different and new to decorate the walls, just moved into a new home or you need to brighten up the room? It’s simple! Just decorate your walls with wall hangings, wall signs, home goods, photo frame or photo collage. Let the wall be the perfect canvas for your creative or not so creative ideas.
Like furniture, wall signs and accents can change the look and mood of the room immediately. When wall signs, hangings and photo frames are hung systematically, the wall will look like a piece from the art gallery, the wall of fame. When the design principles are not followed, the wall will be the perfect wall of shame.

Here are a few tips and trick to an arty wall

  • As a thumb rule, the width of artwork should be 0.57% of the width of the wall. For example, if the wall is 4 feet wide, the artwork should be 4 X 0.57 = 2.28 feet wide.
  • If you are grouping the art work, treat it as one cluster like you would treat a single piece.
  • Use the museum approach to decide the height where the wall decor has to be hung. It should be 145 cm from the floor plus half the length of the painting.
  • When hanging multiple pieces in a room, consider the walls, windows, doors and furniture. Hang the art at a comfortable eye level and In relation to what is already existing in the room.
  • For hanging art behind the sofa, it should be 2/3rd the width of the sofa and about 15-20 cm above the sofa top.
  • If hanging some wall decor above the fireplace, maintain the 2/3rd width, but hang the art 10-30 cm above the mantle depending what you are placing on the mantle.
  • On the dining room wall, place the frame or wall accent at a lower height as it should be comfortably visible while sitting.
  • My favorite is hanging pictures and wall signs along the staircase. Use the same museum approach.
  • Plan the layout by colors, size. You can use the grid method or the modern method where top and bottom border line is maintained while the vertical line can be crooked as different sizes of frames or signs are used.
Don’t let the wall intimidate you. Find the best collection of wall signs and photo frames at viva home decor. The Secret to Hanging Holiday Decor

Each one of us strives to find the holiday decorations that must be good, classic and unique. When you decide to spend money on buying stuff to decorate your home for Halloween or Christmas, keep in mind that what you purchase is usable for more than one holiday and other special occasions. Think way ahead, not just Halloween and Christmas, but New Years, Valentines and a birthday bash too.
Hanging tips this Christmas
Holiday decor needs hanging for the festive time after which we need to remove it and store it safely. It is an ugly proposition to drill holes and hammer nails and leave them hanging after the holiday is over. Here are a few tricks to hang the decor without ruining the walls.
Wall Sign available at Viva Home Decor
  • It is difficult to hang material on bricks. You will need a drill, screws and lesson to repair the holes after the holiday is over. Drill into the mortar joint and not into the brick, which is prone to cracking. Screw the screw into the mortar. After the holidays, pull out the screw and plug the hole with a squirt of mortar repair silicone which is available in a squeezable tube
  • Use hooks to hang stuff on Sheetrock. These hooks are designed to hold different weights, so check on the package to match with the weight that you plan to hang on the hook. All you need to do is install the nail that comes with the package. You can use anchors that are easily removed, but leave a hole. Use these for permanent decorations.
  • A simple nail hammered into the wood too holds a lot of weight and is easy to remove. Install the nail by hammering it. When you need to remove the nail, simply pull it out and fill the hold with putty. Choose a matching putty else you can stain the same to match with the surface

You need not have a master’s degree in tailoring to make window tiers. With little sewing knowledge you can create your own window tiers. All you need to do is imagine the window to be your canvas and how you are going to paint it. The following steps should create window tiers that you have imagined.
  1. Stuff you will need to sew a window tier is measuring tape, scissors, fabric, thread, sewing machine and iron
  2. As tiers usually cover the lower half of the window, measure the height and width of the window accordingly
  3. To this measurement, add about 1 3/4th (one and three fourth) inch for the rod pocket and around 2 1/4th (Two and one fourth) inch for the lower hem
  4. Decide the fullness you want to give to the window tier/window. For gathered tiers double the width, while for extra fullness triple the width
  5. Choose the fabric you want to use. Cotton fabric looks cool, is easy to stitch and maintain while other fabrics may give an elegant look but are slightly tricky to stitch
  6. Cut the fabric as per the measurements. Lay the fabric flat and fold about 1/4th inch on the two sides. Sew this up by running it through the sewing machine using the appropriate thread color
  7. Turn about 1/4th inch across the top and stitch it up
  8. Fold about 1 ½ inch on the top and sew it to make the rod pocket.
  9. Measure the length of the curtain. If it is longer, then cut a bit from the bottom, leaving about 1 inch for lower hem. Hem up the bottom too by folding it about 1/2 inch
  10. When you are stitching, keep the pattern in mind of the fabric and sew accordingly
  11. Iron the stitched panel, push them through the rod and you have the window tiers
Tips to keep in mind while creating your own window tiers
  • Measure in a straight line.
  • Press and pin the fold or iron the same to remove the crease which lets you stitch accurately and neatly.
  • For a ruffle at the top of the rod, adjust the rod pocket measurement.
  • Make sure both panels are of exact measurement.
  • Polyester or synthetic thread is recommended or mercenized cotton thread for cotton fabrics.
  • Remember to remove the pins after sewing if you are using them.

Halloween Ideas
Ghosts can be cut from tissue paper while construction paper can be used to cut out the eyes. Tape this to the window with a few facing inside and a few facing outside. The ones facing outside will appear like peeking out while the one facing inside can appear spookier when you draw a little bit of the curtain so it just peeks in.
Create a bat cave by decorating it with spider webs that you may create of purchase from the local craft store. Place cut outs of bats and spiders inside the spider web.
With construction or craft paper create bats, monsters, trees, owls, witches and paint them black. Stick these to the window and change the light bulb to orange color to give it a festive Halloween look.
