You need not have a master’s degree in tailoring to make window tiers. With little sewing knowledge you can create your own window tiers. All you need to do is imagine the window to be your canvas and how you are going to paint it. The following steps should create window tiers that you have imagined.
  1. Stuff you will need to sew a window tier is measuring tape, scissors, fabric, thread, sewing machine and iron
  2. As tiers usually cover the lower half of the window, measure the height and width of the window accordingly
  3. To this measurement, add about 1 3/4th (one and three fourth) inch for the rod pocket and around 2 1/4th (Two and one fourth) inch for the lower hem
  4. Decide the fullness you want to give to the window tier/window. For gathered tiers double the width, while for extra fullness triple the width
  5. Choose the fabric you want to use. Cotton fabric looks cool, is easy to stitch and maintain while other fabrics may give an elegant look but are slightly tricky to stitch
  6. Cut the fabric as per the measurements. Lay the fabric flat and fold about 1/4th inch on the two sides. Sew this up by running it through the sewing machine using the appropriate thread color
  7. Turn about 1/4th inch across the top and stitch it up
  8. Fold about 1 ½ inch on the top and sew it to make the rod pocket.
  9. Measure the length of the curtain. If it is longer, then cut a bit from the bottom, leaving about 1 inch for lower hem. Hem up the bottom too by folding it about 1/2 inch
  10. When you are stitching, keep the pattern in mind of the fabric and sew accordingly
  11. Iron the stitched panel, push them through the rod and you have the window tiers
Tips to keep in mind while creating your own window tiers
  • Measure in a straight line.
  • Press and pin the fold or iron the same to remove the crease which lets you stitch accurately and neatly.
  • For a ruffle at the top of the rod, adjust the rod pocket measurement.
  • Make sure both panels are of exact measurement.
  • Polyester or synthetic thread is recommended or mercenized cotton thread for cotton fabrics.
  • Remember to remove the pins after sewing if you are using them.
