Born to Decorate – Free The Mind, Decorate The Walls

Have you ever given a thought of using a darker color as the background for wall accents? It is just the white wall that comes to mind when we decide to decorate the wall. White is boring and requires a lot of cleaning to keep it spotless. I chose to try something different…a wall that is not white for my wall decor ideas.
The red wall and a gray wall were what I found to be ideal to hang frames, wall hanging or wall decoration. The dark color on the wall did make the room appear a bit smaller until I decorated it with wall decor. The wall hanging and accents gave the wall a depth and simply made it alive.

Here are a few home wall decor ideas that you can attempt:

  • Fabric on the wall – this is what I call a scribbler for grownups. A starched fabric with something written on it like writing in a notebook and pasted on the wall. This looks good right behind the sofa in the living room or the bedroom wall.
  • Frames – mix and match frames and hang them on the wall. It can be the cozy corner, a niche or to create that feel. Use black and white pictures and break the monotony with red wall accents.
  • Books – stack books all across the wall to decorate the wall. Fix stands like they display shoes in the stores. Stack books on them. In between hang wall decor or place a small artifact or decoration piece on the book.
  • Chalkboard – a chalkboard is one of my favorite home wall decor. A huge chalkboard on the kitchen wall or the patio. This black canvas can be decorated with pictures, pin ups, hanging. Remember to keep some chalk and duster nearby for the ‘child at heart’ to scribble.
  • Dark wall – hang white frames on a dark wall and put some lights on the ceiling. This looks good in alleys at home, making the path look wider.
  • Clock – create a giant clock with wall signs on the wall. This is ideal for children’s room where you can put the signs that must teach something to your kids.
  • Driftwood display – use driftwood with wall signs, frames for the earthy look.
  • Hard top suitcases – I wonder if some of us do still have hard top suitcases? You can actually cut them and stick them into the walls to make shelves. I call it the vintage suitcase shelves.
  • Corner frames – this one is my favorite. Hang frames or wall signs on the two walls that merge into a corner. Use all different sizes of frame. The trick is to create an illusion that the corner is extended. Do this by hanging maximum number of frames at eye level on both the wall. Taper at the top and bottom of this line so a triangle is formed by the wall joint being the bottom of the triangle.
